When we began our family we took some time to talk about what we wanted for our children. It wasn't a long list, but it represented what we feel are important life skills.
One thing that is important to us is encouraging a strong connection to nature and the ability to survive in the outdoors.
When we moved a few years ago I was thrilled when I saw a brochure for a children's program called Primitive Pursuits.
Here is an excerpt from their mission:
We envision a world where each child may once again grow up with the freedom to explore undeveloped nature and access to the knowledge which allows them to care for themselves, their communities and the environment."
They have a homeschool program that starts at age five and we waited anxiously for our son to be ready for it. They spend the entire day outside no matter what the weather!
He socializes with other homeschool kids ranging in ages from 5-10 and together they identify plants, build shelters, track animals and build fires. He comes home exhausted, fulfilled and covered in twigs, leaves and dirt. It's the best!
Right now this program fulfills many of my son's needs while I am a bit more of a homebody with a baby and a busy three-year-old.
I'm thankful for supplemental learning and living opportunities in my community and I hope we are able to continue to provide such important and life enhancing experiences in our children's lives.
