I'm in love. With Abraham Lincoln. Shhhh, don't tell anyone. Steve and I recently finished an amazing eight hour PBS series (A House Divided) about his entire life and relationship with his wife. Fascinating stuff.
So I was in the mood to inspire my little ones this President's Day.
The Story of Abraham Lincoln and The Story of George Washington by Patricia Pingry are simple, sweet books in a series all about historical figures. They give just enough information to keep the children interested without overloading them with boring facts and dates. I wondered if they might be too 'babyish' since they are board books, but they are perfect for my 5, 4, and 3-year-olds.
"Was he (Lincoln) sad about the war?" "Why did he (Washington) chop down the cherry tree?" Just a few questions I received during the readings, which led to conversations about lying (very timely in this household!), how wars start, and checking out the faces on our money.
This series of books works for me. I plan on ordering more as time goes by.
If you have preschoolers, check them out!
