When I was a child a family in our neighborhood took a walk around the block after dinner. As they walked by our house they would invite us to join. I remember skipping ahead with the other kids or sometimes hanging back to talk with the adults. It's a feel good memory that I enjoy passing on to my own children.
We continue to walk as a family, and now that spring has arrived we find it easier to head outdoors with relative ease and comfort.
Sometimes we walk on pavement and sidewalks and other times we walk on woodland paths. Some days our walks lead to a playground or a brook and other days it leads nowhere in particular.
The boys might ride bikes or scooters and the baby rides in a carrier. Other times we take the double stroller and our oldest walks on foot. No matter the details we're together, but with extra space to breathe and move about.
The loud, bouncing energy that feels overwhelming indoors dissipates quickly and smoothly when we go outside.
There is nothing to "mess up", but plenty of leaves to throw, trees to climb and pine cones to kick. There are more opportunities to say "YES!".
It feels good to move our bodies, keep our hearts healthy and breathe fresh air. Walking outdoors gives us time to notice nature and ponder our place in the world. It gives us peace of mind.
Perhaps my favorite part of the family walk is that my husband and I get to talk. The kids are busy and happy and we relish the time to connect.
Our family walks are a simple way to connect, relieve stress and find our way--together.
