It takes time and practice for children to learn. My friend Robyn once told me that being a mother is like being an assembly line worker: you keep doing your part, over and over again, but you don't actually see the finished product for a long time.
That's why these four words are a powerful tool to keep in your Mom-box: Let's try that again.
It's a "do-over" - for times when a child forgets to say please, snatches a toy from a sibling, or whines to get what they need. Using it sets your child up for success and helps build good habits.
Mothers can ask for "do-overs," too. In our house it sounds something like this: "Mommy's really sorry that I (shouted, was angry, felt impatient, fill in the blank!) with you. That was wrong. Can we start again please?"
Children forgive and forget quickly.
So look for opportunities today to grant your child a do-over, or request one for yourself.
A second chance is a beautiful thing.
